Count Down Begins

Great news every one I have an official date of departure, it’s going to be November 27th!

I did a lot of searching to find the best deals so that less money would go towards the plane pricing and more would go toward the kids and the amount of time I can stay in Haiti!

Originally American Airlines was the best price but me being persistent I kept searching and found that Spirit was the best price. Although AA offered 1 free checked bag the cost of just the flight was way too high. When looking in to Spirit I had to pay for every bag but it still brought the price cheaper than AA.

At first I was a little discourage because it said I had to pay for the carry on $20! yikes. Good news was you can have a “personal bag” which is free, it just has to fit under you seat. A carry on would be what goes over head ūüôā duh, silly me. For my personal bag I’ll just be bringing my camera for documenting of course, my laptop for movies since I have about an 11 hour lay over! I’m also going to bring maybe a tooth-brush and extra clothes just in case.

I purchased 2 checked bags ahead of time to save some money which was around $60 relatively not bad. One bag or half of it is going to be for my stuff IE: clothes, hygiene stuff. The other Half of the bag and secondary bag will be stuff for the kids/ orphanage supplies.

I’m super excited to leave now that I have a date and it think I’ll be able to get some cool footage and fun footage in the air port… probably from losing my mind waiting for ever for the next flight.

I actually really enjoy flying I’ve been over sea’s a few times. I must say I feel bad for people who have trouble flying, I find it¬†invigorating. I’ve even thought about becoming a flight attendant at one point, who knows maybe I still will for a year or two. Who can turn up cheap flights right?

So enough about the departure, Emily’s mom and I have been looking into making/ creating new merchandise. I was thinking about doing car magnets and Heather (Em’s mom) was thinking about rubber/Silicone bracelets. I went ahead and did a bit of research and made some tester items, I ordered 1 Bracelet and a magnet with 2 different sets of magnet looks.

I’ll keep every one up to date on Facebook and here let me know what you think if you have any suggestions or have any contacts for merchandise just shoot me an email (justinparkinson@hotmail.com).

Success!

The charity dinner on Thursday night 10/11/12 was a great success, we brought in approximately 110-130 people and raised a ton of money!

There was a huge surprise for everyone even me! Emily Hime and I had planned a Skype interview and she had message me that she would be running a bit late because she had to feed the kids and had run into traffic. I made an¬†announcement¬†that we would be doing the Skype session and that we were a bit delayed… Elvis, Julia Monk’s dad made an¬†announcement¬†following me that she was “delayed by a plane and here she is!” the door opened and in walked Emily (apparently this had been planned for weeks!). The sheer shock I was in was unreal along with the crowds; well actually I don’t know¬†completely¬†how the crowd reacted because I was in shock Emily had flown in from Haiti to surprise everyone. Emily’s mom rushed up the front in tears of joy getting to see Em. I’m not going to lie I was tearing up myself, it was completely unexpected.

The night continued on with amazing music from Elvis and his band as well a lot of happy people winning raffles, we had over 25 raffle items it was great. After Elvis we pulled the 50/50 and the surprises continued, the money that was won went straight to Emily yay!

There wasn’t a lot of speeches now that I think of it but I said a few words as well shared some words that Sarah Griffith wished to be passed on to everyone. Emily came up and gave a bit of an update as well which really¬†fulfilled¬†the night.

Two of Rocketships¬†members¬†Bev and Taylor played¬†acoustic¬†and it was amazing! They were giving out their demo’s and people were eating them up… the future looks bright for them; keep it up guys!

The night continued to be great the guests were having a great time and really enjoyed the music. Emerald Seas¬†played pretty late which koodo’s to them for helping out and sounding fantastic they¬†were great to talk to and work with.

All¬†together¬†Julia and I were very pleased with the night and had a blast setting it up despite the stress when we got there and we were 8 tables short and we still had to add an extra. Another stress¬†incident¬†we ran into was we were waiting for a projector that didn’t seem to be coming but that finally came through at the last-minute… well the last 45 minutes still made us a little crazy. ¬†There’s so many people to thank but the one person I really want to mention is Julia Monk she’s done so much from doing an 8 Hour painting, filming everything possible and just being there as a friend she deserves a lot of credit. Oh yeah and put together the centre pieces I didn’t explain to her before I took off to take care of some other things all while people showed up 45 minutes early SORRY! Another person I want to thank is my mom because of course she helps when I ask and even when I don’t and she’s been pretty supportive despite how crazy it sounds to throw together a charity dinner in… 2 months thanks mom. There are so many more people you know who you are whether you had a major or minor role every little bit helped so THANKS!

So far I’ve raised since the month of May approx $3700. That is not factoring in what I have to pay for the event and the consignment fee’s for the Silent auctions. After a rough calculation we are looking at around $1700 profit and there is still some money to be counted from donation containers!

Future plans to raise money are still up in the air possibly a band night at a venue downtown Windsor. I still want to raise another $800 so fingers crossed; the more money I raise the more I can assist Emily and the Kids at Maison Ke Kontan.

To Donate there’s a donation button on the left sidebar of my blog,¬†as well you can visit¬†www.HimeforHelp.org¬†and there’s a donation button at the top.

Thanks for all the donations to date if you’d like to sponsor a child which is really needed, sending the kids to school is very costly. You can sponsor a kid for only $30 a month depending on the month that’s less than a dollar a day!

Great Things Happen

It’s just under a week away from the dinner on October 11th at the Caboto club and I was really nervous to see how many ticket were sold and expected people at the door. Like before one week I felt there was going to be too many people the next not enough and then back and forth. Well great news we’ve sold around 75 tickets and are expecting anywhere from 25-30 people at the door, that’s not including anyone who’s saw/heard the news paper ads, TV ads, and radio ads. It looks like this event is going to be an amazing turn out and success.

More great news Emily and the kids have moved into a new house! Thanks Bridge 2 Haiti who has paid rent on the house for a year.

“Our BEAUTIFUL new home .. Thank you Bridge2Haiti– Sarah Griffith for sponsoring this place for us. We can’t express enough our appreciation. <3″¬†

~Emily Hime

The new name for the house is “Maison¬†Ke Kontan” -Happy Heart House

Maison Ke Kontan

There’s only 6 more days to the dinner and the good news just keeps coming in! People are slowly donating more items for the raffles, I just have to pick up a few more supplies for the centre pieces and people who can’t make it out are buying tickets anyway (^_^). Like I said before it looks like this dinner is going to be a success but it’s still going to be a lot of work.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time out of their days and nights to help me out. Whether you made phone calls, went door to door, blew up Facebook with advertising about the event, filmed every moment of my progress (Thanks Jules) or just wrote and article or told a friend; thank you every one who has helped, it has made a huge difference.

As the days are counting down to the event I get more anxious to find out how much I can give to Maison Ke Kontan especially now that I have an estimated date of departure which is late November .

Once again can’t tell every one enough how thankful I am for all the support.

Special Thanks to Sarah Griffith & Bridge 2 Haiti.
